When we were at our 4 month doctor's appointment for Andrew, the doctor said it was time to start introducing solid foods. He suggested vegetables, but after some extensive reading I decided to start him on a Rice Cereal and an Oatmeal cereal before jumping in with the vegetables and fruits. We decided that today was the day we were going to do this. My mom and dad were in town and we made it quite the celebration....at least for us. All Andrew knew was that he was hungry, wearing an especially large bib and could not find a bottle anywhere.
We captured the event on both camera and video so that we could all watch as our little guy gobbled up his first attempts at solid food. Here are some pictures of the event....chronologically.
This is how it began...
First Bite...hands trying to grasp on to the spoon like it was a bottle.

Eyes Red From Crying - but we are still trying.
Let me just say this - he actually gagged. I did not know babies could do that - but he did. Then he spent the rest of the time spitting it out, crying with it stuck on his tongue and just completely ticked that after all of this, he still could not find a bottle. I tried maybe 4 or 5 times and then gave up. My mom jumped in at that point and put a big spoonful in his mouth, which he quickly transferred to the big bib. You would have thought we put cement in the child's mouth.
As frustrating as it was for him, we enjoyed it. And, when he is old enough, he will enjoy watching the videos of this experience. Gotta start somewhere!

Awww! Poor Andrew! It may help to give him a small bottle first so he's not super hungry. We found that if Meredith was ravenously hungry, she needed milk first, solids afterward. If he gags though, he may be having trouble transferring the solids to the back of his mouth and swallowing, in which case you might want to wait a few weeks and try again later.
ReplyDeleteOf course, his look of disgust may also be a look of "what the heck did you do to my milk?" :P Meredith would NOT eat cereal that had been mixed with breastmilk. It was like we'd defiled her milk. She would, however, eat cereal that had been mixed with formula, so that might be an option to try with Andrew too.
